Britons Climb To .500

NAPLES, Fla. – Monica Brugnoni and Olivia Imbier both went 4-for-6 at the plate as Albion College scored victories over Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) University and Rockford (Ill.) University in spring break softball action on Tuesday. The Britons, now 4-4 through eight games, have matched win total from all of last season.

Albion 3, Eastern Nazarene 2

Albion scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings and the Britons made the 3-0 lead hold up. Pitcher Monica Brugnoni was not charged with an earned run as she yielded three hits and two walks while striking out eight. She helped her cause with a pair of hits, sending a double down the left field line and coming around to score in the second and lacing a RBI single to score Kaitlyn Hotchkin in the fourth.

Miranda Coty tripled in the third inning and she scored on Julia Anderson's groundout.

Eastern Nazarene scored in the fifth when Emily Gomez sent a two-run single up the middle. Brugnoni retired the next seven Lions batters in order to preserve her second pitching victory of the season.

Albion 12, Rockford 5

Albion scored its most runs in a game since a 12-7 victory over Lake Forest on March 11, 2011.

Albion scored six times in the fifth to erase a 5-0 deficit. Alice Garvin hit a leadoff single and she scored on Anderson's double. After a groundout, the next six Britons reached base safely. Anderson scored on Erica Wagner's bunt single. Hotchkin walked and Brugnoni was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Elena Luce drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Imbier hit a RBI single, and Andrea Benson lined a two-run double.

Brugnoni and Imbier drove in the runs as Albion scored three times in the sixth and seventh innings.

Coty pitched 3.2 scoreless innings to get credit for her first pitching victory at the collegiate level. She allowed one hit while striking out three.
