Defense Leads Britons To Sunday Split

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Albion College gained a split of its games on the opening day of competition during a 10-game series during spring break.

Albion 3, Bridgewater State (Mass.) 1

Monica Brugnoni had 13 strikeouts and the defense played error free as Albion won its first game of the day. Brugnoni helped her cause with two hits. Kaitlyn Hotchkin and Elena Luce also produced two hits apiece.

Head Coach Leigh Ann LaFave credited the Britons for making a number of outstanding plays, including Hotchkin's catch over the home plate umpire and Miranda Coty doing the splits to get the out on a close play at first base. LaFave also singled out the defense played by Alice Garvin and Erica Wagner.

"Overall, it was a great team effort for the first win of the season," LaFave said. "We showed up mentally to play. I'm proud of them for competing and playing seven innings of solid ball."

Wilmington (Ohio) 8, Albion 2

Julia Anderson produced a RBI single and Kaitlyn Hotchkin drew a bases loaded walk as Albion forged a 2-2 tie in the third. Wilmington took advantage of four errors in the fourth and fifth to plate six runs.
