Briton tennis players begin fall competition

Matthew Czarnecki and Patrick Smoker recorded a pair of victories in singles action as the Albion College men's tennis team started its fall competition in an invitational tournament at Hope College.

A first-year student-athlete who prepped at University of Detroit Jesuit, Czarnecki won both of his matches in straight sets (6-0, 6-0 over Collin Malek; and 7-5, 6-2 over Will Boa).

Smoker, a sophomore who prepped at Kalamazoo Central, scored a 7-6 (4), 1-6, 10-8 victory over Michael Hoffman and a 6-2, 6-0 result over Jonny Stob.

Tselmeg Mendsaikhan earned a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 victory over Blaise Eisele in singles and he joined Carter Moore for a pair of victories in doubles.

Two more Briton doubles teams (Brett Gurzell and Toma Shngoo and Stephen Smoker and Reece Morey) also recorded wins.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
