MIAA recognizes Maurer, Wonner

Jake Maurer was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Diver of the Week for the second time this season and Evan Wonner was selected as the Swimmer of the Week for the first time as Albion College gained a sweep of the league's weekly awards.

A senior from Lake Orion, Mich., Maurer achieved a career-best score of 287.63 on the 3-meter board during a Feb. 2 dual meet against Eastern Michigan University. The score, which was more than 40 points better than his previous career-best, also qualified him to compete in the NCAA Regional Championships in March.

Maurer also finished less than a ½ point shy of his season-best score in the 1-meter competition, finishing with a score of 260.33.

Wonner, a first-year swimmer from St. Clair, Mich., put together his best meet at the collegiate level at Eastern Michigan. His most notable performance came in the 100-yard butterfly where his 51.71-second time is best in the MIAA since the new year. He also achieved the best time in the 50 freestyle last week (21.66), a performance that places him second in the MIAA since the new year. Wonner also set his season-best time in the 100 free at 47.38 seconds.

Albion will travel to Olivet College on Saturday for its final MIAA dual meet of the season. The MIAA Swimming and Diving Championship runs from Feb. 21-24 in Grand Rapids.
