Harder, Wonner rise to the occasion

YPSILANTI, Mich. – First-year swimmer Evan Wonner had his best all-around meet of the season and senior Lucas Harder fed off the excitement of diving in the pool against an Eastern Michigan University program considered among the best of the mid-majors Friday night.

Albion was not concerned as much about the final score, a 154-123 setback, as it was getting experience in a deep pool and responding against great competition.

Wonner fine-tuned his stroke and was awarded runner-up points in the sprint freestyle events as well as the 100-yard butterfly.

Harder went in to the meet noting Eastern Michigan swimmers all went under 2:10 in the 200 breaststroke. Harder wasn't intimidated as he completed his race in 2:09.67.

In the diving well, Jake Maurer reached the qualifying score for the regional meet with a 287.63 total in the 3-meter competition. First-year student-athlete Tai Sims achieved a 273.82 total in the 1-meter competition. Jake Burris had Albion's top score on both boards (281.48 on 1-meter and 295.73 on 3-meter).

Albion returns to competition against a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival tomorrow when it dives in the pool at Alma College.
