The stopwatch is usually the rival when the Albion College swimming and diving program churns laps in the pool.
Cancer, however, was the opponent while the Britons trained Nov. 7 as they raised more than $1,000 to support the 12th annual Ted Mullin Hour of Power. Teams are encouraged to engage in a continuous relay of any stroke for an hour in honor of the former Carleton College swimmer who passed away from synovial sarcoma in September 2006.
"We do this because everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another and hits home to our team," Grace Rowe, a sophomore from Grand Rapids, said. "Our assistant coach, Mary Ann Egnatuk, had cancer last year and she beat it thankfully but it just goes to show how everyone is affected. This is a great cause and it's so fun to have a little competition between the two teams to see who could raise the most money."
