Albion Responds With First Win of the Season

MANCHESTER, Ind. - Albion College earned its first win of the season Tuesday with a 2-1 decision over Manchester University in non-league men's soccer action.

Head Coach Jerry Block was pleased with how his team responded after a frustrating Labor Day weekend that saw the Britons go 0-2.

"It was a spirited game and the guys played hard," Block said. "I'm proud of the boys because we did all of the things we've been working on to produce a great result."

Albion never trailed in the contest. Matt Woster (Canton/Salem) made a nice run down the wing and slotted a shot at the far post in the 21st minute for his first goal of the season. Woster ripped six of Albion's 19 shots in the contest.

Manchester scored the equalizer in the 38th minute, but that spurred the Briton effort in the final 45 minutes. Albion held a dominating 8-3 edge in shots in the second half and that pressure payed off in the form of an own goal. Grant Juth (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern) hit a free kick off a Manchester defender for the goal.

"We kept persevering," Block said.

Albion returns home at 3:30 p.m. Saturday to challenge local rival Spring Arbor University.
