Stephen Draper joined the Albion men's basketball coaching staff in 2017.

Following a rebuilding season in Coach Draper’s first season with Albion in 2017-18 (9-16), the Britons made a huge jump in 2018-19. Draper helped Albion achieve a 19-9 record during the 2018-19 season and capture the second Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship in school history during his second season on the bench. The 2018-19 season included a list of milestones for a young Britons team:

  • Two sophomores selected to the all-MIAA first team for the first time in program history

  • Five MIAA Player of the Week awards for the first time in program history

  • 75 points per game, the highest scoring average in 15 years

  • The No. 1 defense in the MIAA allowing 67.9 points per game

  • The program made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005

  • Wins over Two NCAA Tournament teams

  • Top 10 Ranking in Great Lakes Region during the season

  • Four first-year players contributed on the varsity

  • Five athletes achieved distinction on the MIAA Honor Roll

Draper came to Albion after two successful seasons as an assistant to Jon VanderWal (Albion College ‘01) at Marietta College. The Pioneers achieved a 51-9 record with a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season championships and an OAC Tournament championship in his time there. His two year tenure coincided with the most dominant stretch in program history for a perennial powerhouse. It saw the Pioneers achieve a national ranking as high as No. 3 multiple times, have a junior (AJ Edwards) be voted 1st Team All-American, have 7 players voted to All-OAC teams, tie the best conference record in OAC History (17-1 in 2015-16), and appear in back to back NCAA tournaments. Coach Draper participated in all facets of the program at Marietta College from player development, to game planning and scouting reports.

Draper spent three years as the head junior varsity and assistant varsity boy's basketball coach at Holt High School prior to moving to Marietta. During his time at Holt High School under head coach Matt Essell (Albion College ‘95), Draper helped Holt achieve back-to-back league and district titles. A 33-14 combined record led to two players receiving All State recognition, four players receiving All Region recognition, and five players being selected for All District teams. In his two years with the varsity team, the Rams sent 5 players on to play in college.

In addition to his time at Holt High School, Draper's resume includes extensive experience in individual skill development, both domestically and internationally. Since 2005, he has worked with various organizations training athletes from youth camps to NBA players.

Draper has worked with Primetime Camps (Allen Park), 1 on 1 Sports (Ann Arbor) and I'mpossible Training (Lansing). He also started his own company in 2014, Draper Basketball Training LLC. while running camps in Lansing for over 200 athletes a week.

Draper has travelled the globe using sports as a platform to help others. He spent a month in Varanasi, India, teaching sports and music at Nirman Vidyashram, an arts based private school. Draper has also spent several weeks in Uganda, the Dominican Republic and Oaxaca City, Mexico, teaching sports and doing various service projects.

Draper graduated from Spring Arbor University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Studies and a minor in English. Following graduation he worked for Playworks, a non-profit organization, teaching conflict resolution skills in the Detroit public schools.
