Albion slams Calvin on MIAA opening night

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College Head Men's Basketball Coach Jody May presented his team with two commandments prior to its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association matchup against Calvin University.

  • Don't foul Derrick DeVries
  • Don't let one of the other Knights have a big night

Albion mastered the game plan and it rolled to a 93-62 victory on the opening night of league play inside Kresge Gymnasium.

DeVries knocked down a 3-point basket on Calvin's first possession, but the Knights held the lead for just 37 seconds. DeVries was held to 14 points, his second-lowest total this season. He received support from Alex Bos, who led the Knights with 23.

Jamezell Davis, Jr., and Caden Ebeling hit two baskets apiece as Albion opened up a 10-5 lead three minutes into the game.

Justin McAbee came off the bench to knock down a pair of 3-point baskets as Albion extended the margin to 21-11 midway through the first half.

Albion led 49-27 at halftime and it only got better as Ebeling threw down a dunk on the first possession of the second half.

Albion Notes

  • Ebeling finished with 26 points, his fourth with at least 20 points this season. He scored on 9-of-13 shots from the field and 8-of-12 from the line.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu
