Albion, MSU to square off in Oct. 29 men's basketball exhibition game

Albion College, the 2019 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament champions, will tip off the men's basketball season with an Oct. 29 exhibition game against Big Ten champion and Final Four participant Michigan State University.

Tip time, ticket information and any television coverage for the game at the Breslin Center will be announced at a later date.

In addition to giving Albion a meaningful tune up prior to its Nov. 8 opener at the University of Mount Union, the exhibition provides an opportunity for Albion guards Zachary and Khy Winston to compete against their older brother Cassius, a consensus All-American and the Big Ten Player of the Year for Michigan State in 2019.

"We have the utmost respect for Head Coach Tom Izzo and the Michigan State basketball program," Albion Head Coach Jody May said. "We are excited for the opportunity to take the floor against one of the top college basketball teams in the country.

"This will be a memorable experience for the players, staff, and community of Albion College as well as the Winston family," May added. "The opportunity for Cassius, Zach, and Khy to be on the floor together will be an amazing occasion for their family. We appreciate the opportunity provided by Coach Izzo and Michigan State University."

The MIAA is America's oldest collegiate conference and Michigan State was a member of the MIAA from 1888-1907 when it was known as Michigan Agricultural College. The Britons and Spartans have played 11 official men's basketball games, the last two were Spartan victories in January of 1945. Albion's only victory in the series was a 37-31 decision on Jan. 12, 1927 in East Lansing.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu.
