Britons set up race to the finish

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College did its part to set up a set up a frantic race to the finish in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball race by holding off a challenge from Adrian College, 63-57, at Kresge Gymnasium.

Coupled with Olivet College's 90-78 victory over Trine University, Albion (15-6 overall, 8-2 MIAA) moved into a tie with Trine for the league lead with four games left.

The Britons begin a three-game road swing Wednesday night with a trip to Kalamazoo College. Albion travels to Trine on Saturday and to Calvin College next Wednesday before completing the regular season with a Feb. 16 home date against Hope College.

Albion led by 13 midway through the second half, but Jeremy Kalonji brought Adrian back in a hurry with 3-point baskets on consecutive possessions. Jordan Harris added another 3-point basket and the margin was just four with eight minutes left.

Albion was able to boost the lead up to eight twice, but Adrian would not go away. Ke'Shaun Wyatt-Morris scored two layups and Harris knocked down a jumper to make the score 59-57 with a minute to play.

Jamezell Davis, Jr. boosted the lead back to four with a basket and Adrian was unable to respond, misfiring on a pair of shots from 3-point range.

Of Note

  • Caden Ebeling secured his sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. He was 6-of-8 from the field.
  • Quinton Armstrong finished his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. He added two assists and a steal.
  • Jaylin Fordham (13), MJ Barnes (10) and Davis (10) also scored in double figures for Albion.
  • Fordham stuffed the box score with five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
  • With 15 victories to date, Albion has achieved its most wins since the 2010-2011 squad finished 15-12.
