Football takes the lead in latest SAAC clinic

Nearly 100 local kids and one Special Olympian turned out on a sun drenched Schmidt-Fraser Field as the Albion College football team took its turn leading a clinic sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Markell McCoy, a junior running back from Oak Park, Mich., said his position group led the kids through agility drills before teaching them the fundamentals involved in taking a handoff and touchdown celebrations.

"I truly do enjoy working with the youth. Waking up early to spread some knowledge and play with the kids was a very important task for me because I find my happiness in knowing I've positively affected their lives," McCoy said. "I am a mentor at Harrington Elementary School in Albion, as well as a Smooth Transitions Mentor for Albion College freshmen because I feel that life lessons I've learned from my elders and personal experiences could help catapult the youth to be better and more successful than me.

"The most important message I wanted the kids to take away from the clinic is that sports are about having fun while competing," McCoy added. "Sports are a great way to stay active, while still having a great time doing so."

The Briton men's and women's basketball teams will take the lead for the final clinic of the semester. It runs from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Dow Recreation and Wellness Center.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu.
