Football team grinds out win at Concordia

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Doug Freeman rushed for 203 yards and a touchdown and Markell McCoy added 148 yards and a score as Albion College grinded out a 57-42 victory over Concordia University in non-league football action.

Albion gained control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 28-7. Kyle Thomas scored from a yard out and he threw touchdown passes to Kolby Canfield and Marlon Martin. McCoy finished the scoring in the quarter for the Britons, running to the end zone from four yards out.

Darius Case completed Albion's scoring for the day, hauling in a 10-yard pass from Thomas with 13 minutes left to play.

Thomas threw for 185 yards and four touchdowns. Canfield was his top target with five receptions for 75 yards.

The teams traded scores for much of the first half. Freeman scored on a 33-yard run, Martin hauled in a 26-yard pass from Thomas and Andrew Fabry kicked three field goals as Albion led, 22-20, at halftime.

Donovan Slates led the Albion defense with 10 tackles. Quinten Jackson wrapped up nine tackles, including a sack, and he was credited with forcing and recovering a fumble.

Game Notes

  • Albion generated 637 total yards. According to NCAA statistics, that's the 10th-highest total by a Division III team in a game this season. Albion also holds the No. 2 spot on the list after gaining 672 yards in the win over Franklin last Saturday.
  • Albion rushed for 442 yards in the game. Only five Division III teams gained more yards on the ground in a game in the first two weeks of the season.
  • Only 12 D-III running backs have rushed for more yards than Freeman in a game this season. Freeman and McCoy both set career rushing highs.
