Starting pitchers pave way to doubleheader sweep

ALBION, Mich. – Mitch Shedlowsky and Scott Grant produced quality starts on the mound as Albion College started a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series by sweeping the Monday doubleheader from Alma College at Champions Stadium.

Game One: Albion 5, Alma 3

Shedlowsky (3-1) cruised through five innings, allowing three hits. He received some help from the defense, too, when you consider:

  • Right fielder Matt Bur caught a line drive and threw behind the runner for the force at first base for a double play to end the first inning
  • Catcher Jordyn Finney threw out a runner trying to steal in the fourth and he threw behind a runner for a pickoff in the fifth

Shedlowsky tired in the sixth as he allowed three consecutive singles. Alma scored its three runs in the inning.

Bret Chesla retired the side in order in the seventh to gain his second save of the season.

Albion scored all of its runs in the third. Finney slugged a RBI double, two runs came home when Kellan Huang hit the ball hard at the shortstop and Dylan Perry cleared the centerfield fence for a two-run homerun.

Game Two: Albion 6, Alma 1

Grant allowed a run on nine hits and two walks over eight innings. He struck out six.

Albion scored all of the runs Grant would need in the third. Riley Stesiak picked up a RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, two more runs scored on Huang's single, Stesiak scored as part of a double steal, and Perry tacked on a RBI single.

Joe Turnbull scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.

On Deck

Albion (10-6 overall, 5-1 MIAA) will put its four-game winning streak on the line at 2 o'clock tomorrow when it completes the series with Alma with a doubleheader at Klenk Park.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu.
