Britons split Sunday MIAA baseball doubleheader

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College split its Sunday baseball doubleheader with Olivet College to take three of the four games in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series.

Kellan Huang went 4-for-6 with two walks and two runs batted in and he was the winning pitcher in game two. Joe Turnbull went 3-for-6 with two doubles and four RBI, and Riley Stesiak went 3-for-6 with a triple and three RBI.

Game 1: Olivet 5, Albion 4

Ben Compton hit a two-run single to cap Olivet's four-run uprising in the second inning and the Comets never trailed.

Albion responded by scoring twice in the bottom of the second (Drew Olszewski drew a walk and Stesiak was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded) and it trailed 4-3 when Stesiak scored on a wild pitch in the third.

Olivet tacked on an important insurance run in the fifth when Matt Hewitt singled to score Riley Bennett.

Albion got its first two batters aboard in the seventh (Jordyn Finney and Luke Bottomley hit singles) to bring the winning run to the plate, but the Britons were unable to get another hit.

Game 2: Albion 11, Olivet 6

Albion scored eight times over the first four innings and that was all the support Huang needed to improve to 3-0 on the mound. Huang lasted five innings, and David Kauff pitched four shutout innings in relief to gain his first save. Kauff allowed one hit and two walks.

Huang helped his cause with two singles, two walks and two RBI.

On Deck

Albion, 7-6 overall, is scheduled to host Heidelberg University at 4 p.m. Tuesday for a nine-inning non-league game.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu.
