Fabry pitches Albion to doubleheader split

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – First baseman James Spilko collected three hits and scored three runs to support pitcher Andrew Fabry who matched his career high with eight strikeouts as Albion College salvaged a game in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series with Calvin College with a 6-1 victory in the second game of the Monday doubleheader at Calvin College.

Calvin won the first three games of the series, including the first game of the Monday doubleheader, 4-3 in 10 innings.

Fabry (3-1) scattered five hits in his second complete game of the season. Calvin's run was unearned as Mitch Mustert reached base safely to leadoff the third inning. Fabry retired nine batters in a row after Mustert scored to cut the Albion lead to 3-1.

Spilko scored in the third, fifth and seventh innings.

Designated hitter Jack Wyman produced two hits and third baseman Cameron Doornweerd added two hits and a RBI.

Second baseman Kellan Huang delivered the hit to give Albion some breathing room, a single to score Spilko and Wyman in the fifth.

Game One

Wyman and Huang drove in runs as Albion took a 2-1 lead in the third.

Calvin answered in its half of the third with a solo homerun by Jonathan Keane and Mustert's RBI single.

Jordyn Finney's infield single pushed Joe Turnbull across the plate as Albion forged a 3-3 tie in the fourth and the score stayed that way until Sam Schellenberg came through with a pinch-hit single to end the game in the 10th.

Albion had an opportunity to take the lead, loading the bases with one out in the ninth.

Riley Stesiak was 3-for-5 with a run scored to lead Albion at the plate.

Mitch Shedlowsky gave Albion a quality start on the mound, yielding three runs on eight hits and two walks over eight innings.

The Series

Spilko hit .571 (8-for-14) with a double, a triple and two RBI. He also drew two walks in the series.

Doornweerd (6-for-13) and Stesiak (7-for-17) also hit better than .400 in the four games.

On Deck

Albion (7-17 overall, 5-7 MIAA) is scheduled to begin a four-game series with Kalamazoo College on Saturday with a 1 o'clock doubleheader at Champions Stadium.
