Baseball Britons drop Thursday doubleheader

ALBION, Mich. – James Spilko and Riley Stesiak collected four hits each, but they were unable to carry the offense as Albion College took 3-2 and 5-2 losses to Calvin College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader at Champions Stadium.

The losses drop Albion to 6-16 overall and 4-6 in MIAA games. The Britons are scheduled to complete the four-game series with Calvin at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Game One

Jack Wyman gave Albion a quality start on the mound, allowing nine hits and a walk in going the distance. Wyman helped his cause when he delivered a RBI single in the third as Albion forged a 1-1 tie.

Albion tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth when Spilko slugged a double to left field pushing pinch-runner Matt Bur across the plate.

Calvin scored the winning run in the eighth when Ricky Padilla crossed the plate after Wyman uncorked a wild pitch on a third strike to Beau Redfield.

Game Two

Albion may have run itself out of a scoring chance in the fifth. Trailing 4-0, the Britons loaded the bases with no out on singles by Cameron Doornweerd and Stesiak and a walk to Joe Turnbull. Doornweerd was thrown out at the plate by Miles Kuperus on Kellan Huang's fly ball to short right field.

Turnbull delivered a sacrifice fly and Stesiak a RBI single in the seventh.

Albion had the tying run at the plate, but Logan Walker shut the door to pocket his third save of the season.

Scott Grant worked all seven innings for Albion on the mound. He allowed 11 hits and a walk while striking out seven.
