Fabry's gem carries Albion to baseball victory

ALBION, Mich. – Andrew Fabry had his off-speed pitches working to perfection on a chilly Tuesday afternoon in leading Albion College to a 3-0 victory over Bluffton University in its home opener at Champions Stadium at Frank Joranko Field.

The junior from Grosse Pointe South needed just 96 pitches to complete his three-hitter that featured seven strikeouts.

Fabry took a perfect game into the seventh inning. He retired the first 19 batters until Colin Gregory sent a softly hit ball to shortstop Joe Turnbull. Jacob Latkofsky followed with another softly hit ball to second base with two out in the inning. Bluffton failed to score as Ryan Maus lined out to third baseman Cameron Doornweerd.

Riley Stesiak aggressively ran the bases in the fourth to score Albion's first run. After a leadoff single, Stesiak advanced to third on James Spilko's single to right field. Stesiak scored when Kellan Huang grounded out to third base.

Albion took advantage of two errors by the Bluffton shortstop to add two more runs in the sixth. Spilko scored on a balk and Doornweerd's sacrifice bunt pushed Huang across the plate.

Albion finished the day with eight hits, all singles. Spilko delivered three hits and Stesiak had two.

Albion (2-9) is scheduled to play its first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series of the season this weekend. Albion and Olivet College are set to meet for a 1 o'clock doubleheader at Champions Stadium.
