Baseball Britons Gain Split In Home Opener

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College gained a split of its first varsity baseball games at Champions Stadium at Frank Joranko Field Sunday afternoon.

Joe Turnbull collected five RBI on the day as Albion lost the first game against Defiance College, 8-6, but it came back to win game two, 14-5.

Game One

Defiance scored three times in the eighth to erase Albion's 6-5 lead.

Justin Green hit a two-run triple and Turnbull and James Spilko tacked on RBI singles as Albion scored four times in the fourth to gain a 4-1 lead.

Albion was unable to get the shutdown inning as Defiance took advantage of two Briton errors to score three times with two out in its half of the fifth.

Justin Dennis hit a RBI double for Albion in the fifth and Jordyn Finney produced a RBI single in the seventh.

Mitch Shedlowsky, Albion's starting pitcher, allowed one earned run on eight hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out a season-high six.

Game Two

Albion trailed 5-2, but rallied for 12 runs in its last three at-bats. The Britons scored four times in the seventh and added seven more in the eighth.

Turnbull collected three of Albion's 11 hits. He slugged a double and produced four RBI.

Jack Wyman contributed two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Finney and Green also drove in two runs.

Patrick O'Brien (2-0) pitched three scoreless innings of relief to gain credit for the win.

"Obviously, it was good to come back and get the game two win," Head Coach Scott Carden said. "We need to do a better job of doing the little things and making the routine plays early in the game."

On Deck

Albion, now 7-3 on the season, travels to Bluffton University for a non-league game on Tuesday. The Britons are scheduled to host Kalamazoo College at 1 o'clock on Saturday for its first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader of the season.
