Clutch Hit Proves Elusive

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Albion College collected five more hits than Calvin College Thursday, but the Britons hit .150 with runners in scoring position as the Britons came away with 3-0 and 8-7 losses in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader.

Game One

Albion pitcher Craig Conway allowed three runs on three hits and six walks. His nine strikeouts was a season high.

Calvin scored runs in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead. Jordan VanderWall hit a leadoff double in the first. VanderWall advanced to third on a fly ball by Steven Seager and scored on a sacrifice fly by Colton Wolfe. Ryan Stewart hit a leadoff single in the second and he scored as Conway walked three consecutive batters.

Calvin tacked on an insurance run in the fifth. VanderWall drew a walk to start the inning and he scored on Wolfe's one-out single.

Albion, meanwhile, never got the clutch it as it stranded runners at second and third in the first and fourth, and stranded a runner at second after Justin Fujarski doubled in the second.

Jack Wyman collected two of Albion's six hits in the game.

Game Two

Albion forged a 5-5 tie in the sixth and scored a run in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead, but Calvin rallied to score three in its half of the seventh.

Albion pounded out 12 hits, with Ronnie Williams III collecting four and Ben Gehan and Steven Marowski adding two apiece.

Wyman and Michael Fischbach hit back-to-back doubles in the fifth. Shane Lindemann and Wyman scored on Fischbach's double. Fischbach stole third and scored on Marowski's sacrifice fly.

Kenny Frieswyk drew a leadoff walk in the sixth and he scored on Gehan's single.

Marowski hit a leadoff single in the seventh. He advanced to second on Williams' single and a bunt by Fujarski. Marowski scored on a sacrifice fly by Spencer Bonofiglio.

Wolfe provided the power for Calvin in the seventh, belting a two-run homerun.

Albion loaded the bases in the ninth, but it only managed one run as Justin Dennis was credited with the RBI.

On Deck

The teams will complete the four-game series with a 1 o'clock Saturday doubleheader at Frank Joranko Field.
