Shedlowsky Throws No-No

OLIVET, Mich. – Mitch Shedlowsky threw Albion's seventh no-hitter against a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Tuesday as the Britons salvaged a split of the doubleheader against Olivet College with a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

Shedlowsky's gem came after Albion fell, 7-6, in 11 innings.

A first-year pitcher from Waterford, Shedlowsky struck out nine and walked six. And, as is the case with any no-hitter, he got help from a defense that was not charged with an error. Olivet's best scoring chance came in the fifth inning when Stephen Botti reached third base with two out.

"Mitch got himself into trouble by walking guys, but he made big pitches in several situations to keep the no-hitter," Albion Head Coach Scott Carden said.

Michael Fischbach, who collected two hits in each game, provided all the run support Shedlowsky would need when he hit a two-run homerun. It was his fourth of the season and it gives him 19 runs batted in.

Ben Gehan drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh inning as Albion extended game one to extra innings. Austin Cleaver's one out single in the 11th drove in Brady Johnson with the winning run.

Albion rallied from a 4-1 deficit as Justin Dennis and Kenny Frieswyk produced RBI singles in the fourth and Jack Wyman scored on an error in the fifth.

Andrew Fabry pitched well in relief, allowing two earned runs on seven hits over 7.1 innings. He struck out eight and walked two.

On deck for Albion is a four-game series with Calvin which starts with a 2 p.m. Thursday doubleheader in Grand Rapids.
