The Albion College baseball team suffered a pair of losses to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Calvin College on Saturday afternoon by scores of 8-4 and 6-2. The losses dropped Albion to 13-13 on the season and 7-9 in MIAA play.
Game One
Nate Brubaker started on the mound for the Britons and gave up just three runs in the first five innings. He received offensive support in the fourth as Michael Fischbach hit a RBI double and Steven Marowski, Ronnie Williams III and Kyle Kowal all produced RBI singles.
Albion led 4-3 after five innings, but the Knights tacked on two runs in the sixth. Patrick Avila hit a RBI double and he came in to score on a passed ball.
The Britons had a chance to respond but were stymied by the pitching of Calvin starter Ben Guilfoyle and reliever Kyle Wasserberger. The Knights put the game away in the top of the seventh inning scoring three runs.
The Britons had no trouble putting the bat on the ball, but they weren't able to find the gaps.
"We didn't swing with a good approach," Head Coach Scott Carden said. "It wasn't a good day offensively for us — we didn't take advantage of the few pitching miscues they had."
Despite having zero strikeouts, Albion finished the game with just five hits.
Kowal collected two hits and stole a base.
Game Two
Jack Wyman got the start for the Britons in game two and collected six strikeouts over five innings. Unfortunately for the home team, Calvin was able to capitalize on some rare Briton mistakes.
"We gave them way too many good pitches," Carden said. "Give Calvin a lot of credit. You can't give them any opportunities because they won't miss them."
Shane Lindemann had a strong outing in game two batting 2-for-4 and stealing a base. Williams was 3-for-3 with a run scored. Justin Dennis had Albion's lone RBI of the game.
Albion takes a breather from MIAA competition when it takes on local rival Spring Arbor University in a 4 o'clock showdown on Tuesday.
"We still have to figure out who the nine guys we want out on the field are," Carden said about the non-league meeting. "It should be a great opportunity for our guys to get a spark going into the weekend series with Hope."
