Thompson, Villabroza honored by the MIAA

ShaQuoria Thompson, a first-year student who competes in the throwing events, and Jenina Villabroza, the junior goalkeeper for the women's lacrosse team, represent Albion College among the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Players of the Week for April 8.

Thompson, a Waxahachie, Texas, product, was a two-time MIAA Athlete of the Week during the indoor track and field season. She won the discus throw at the Marv Frye Invitational in Delaware, Ohio, on Saturday with a performance of 135' 5" and scored third place in the shot put at 40' 9 ¾".

The Briton track and field athletes are excited for the opportunity to compete at home on Friday. The Britons will welcome Alma College and Olivet College for a triangular meet with a 3:30 p.m. start.

Villabroza, a Glendale, Calif., product, is gaining her third MIAA Defensive Player of the Week this season. She was sharp – with a .698 save percentage and 6.50 goals against average – as Albion remained undefeated against MIAA rivals with victories over Adrian College, 14-3, and Calvin College, 11-10, last week.

She collected seven saves to shutout Adrian in the second half, and protected Albion's one-goal lead over Calvin by making a save with 1:34 left in regulation.

Winners of four in a row, Albion will travel to Alma College for a Wednesday night MIAA game.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu.
