Men's lacrosse goalkeeper Josh Luketic and baseball pitcher Mitch Shedlowsky represent Albion College among the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for March 25.
A sophomore from Brighton, Mich., Luketic is receiving the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in men's lacrosse for the first time in his career.
Luketic stopped 74 percent of the shots he faced and scooped 13 groundballs last Saturday as Albion handed Aurora University its first loss of the season. Luketic collected 17 saves, matching his career high, and the six goals were the fewest he has allowed while playing a full 60-minute game for Albion.
The full-time starter for Albion over the last five games, Luketic boasts a .602 save percentage and a 8.59 goals against average.
Albion will travel in Granville, Ohio, on Saturday for a matchup against the nationally ranked team from Denison University.
Shedlowsky, a senior from Waterford, Mich., who prepped at Mott High School, has been named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week in baseball for the second time in his career.
He was brilliant in pitching Albion to a 10-0 victory over Olivet College in the first game of a doubleheader last Saturday. He scattered two hits and a walk in the complete seven-inning game. It was his fourth career shutout and he has not allowed a run over his last 11 innings.
The only pressure Shedlowsky encountered all game came in the second inning when Aaron Gillespie greeted him with a leadoff single down the left field line. Gillespie advanced to third on a pair of ground balls and the Comets had runners on the corners when Ben Compton drew a two-out walk. Shedlowsky got out of the inning by getting Hayden Zimmerman to fly out to right field.
Shedlowsky retired 12 batters in a row until Matt Hewitt hit a single with two out in the sixth.
Through four starts this season, Shedlowsky is 2-1 with a 2.11 earned run average.
Albion has a non-league home date with Heidelberg University at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The Britons are scheduled to begin a MIAA weekend series Saturday with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Alma College.
Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
