Burris, Vince among MIAA Athlete of the Week award winners

Diver Jake Burris and cross country runner Cassie Vince represent Albion College among the Oct. 29 Athletes of the Week in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

A senior from Chelsea, Mich., Burris achieved scores that place him among the top 20 Division III divers at this point of the season in a dual meet at Kalamazoo College last Saturday. Burris won both diving events, setting a score of 291.55 on the 1-meter board and 279.16 in the 3-meter competition.

The next meet for the Albion swimming and diving teams is a quadrangular meet at Calvin College on Friday and Saturday.

Vince, a senior from Amherst, Ohio, achieved her place in Albion women's cross country history on Saturday.

She became the first Albion woman to finish as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Most Valuable Runner after being the first runner to cross the finish line in the MIAA Cross Country Championship contested at the Eastern Hills Golf Club.

She completed the 6K course in 21:29.7, nearly 48 seconds ahead of runner-up Emily Hamilton representing Hope College.

Prior to Saturday, Sarah Hall set the highest finish by an Albion woman in the MIAA Championship. Hall finished second in the 1983 meet.

Next up for the Albion runners is the NCAA Division III Regional Championship. That meet is scheduled for Nov. 10 in Shelbyville, Ind.
