Four Britons gain MIAA awards

Four Albion College student-athletes – men's soccer forward Will Colborn, football kicker Andrew Fabry, women's soccer forward Samantha LaRocca and volleyball middle blocker Marie Pregenzer – were selected among the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Players of the Week for Oct. 1.

Colborn, a senior from Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., who prepped at Grosse Pointe South, was named the Offensive Player of the Week in men's soccer after scoring the game-winning goal to lift the men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the regionally ranked side from Carthage (Wis.) College last Tuesday.

Through nine matches for the Britons, Colborn has generated four goals and an assist.

The men's soccer team boasts a 5-2-2 record as it begins MIAA action with a 7 p.m. Wednesday home match against Trine University.

Fabry, also a product of Grosse Pointe South, kicked three field goals as the football team escaped with a 37-34 double overtime victory over Alma College. The Special Teams Player of the Week was good from 41 yards out late in the second quarter and he added kicks of 28 and 33 yards in overtime.

Through four games, Fabry has made all seven of his field goal attempts and he is 26 of 27 on extra point opportunities.

The football team will take a 4-0 record into its Homecoming game against Hope College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on the Schmidt-Fraser Field inside Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.

LaRocca, a senior from Clinton Township who prepped at Regina High School, was named the Offensive Player of the Week in women's soccer after scoring three goals as the women's soccer team defeated Saint Mary's College, 3-1, and Trine, 2-0, on the first week of MIAA play.

Credited with five goals and two assists in 11 matches this season, LaRocca sits atop the Britons scoring list for the season with 12 points.

The women's soccer team will take a 5-5-1 overall record and a 2-0 record against MIAA rivals into a 4 p.m. Tuesday match at Alma.

Pregenzer, a senior who prepped at Kalamazoo Central High School, hit .333 with 13 kills as the volleyball team took a 25-21, 25-19, 25-18 victory at Olivet last Wednesday. Pregenzer assisted on two blocks, served up two aces and collected four digs, as well.

In statistics for MIAA matches only, Pregenzer boasts the highest hitting percentage in the league at .382 (27 kills and six errors in 55 attacks) and the most service aces with seven.  Her nine total blocks places her in a tie for fourth in the MIAA.

The volleyball team, winners of four in a row to move to 10-5 overall and 3-0 in MIAA competition, have a home match against Alma on Tuesday. The first serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
