Haddad, VanDorn score MIAA awards

First-year women's tennis player Alise Haddad and volleyball setter Grace VanDorn represent Albion College among the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week selections for Sept. 24.

Haddad, who prepped at Powers Catholic High School, advanced to the quarterfinal round of the back draw in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championship.

After falling to Kayla Pukys (Kenyon College) in a tiebreaker in the first round of the mail draw, Haddad responded with three victories – all in straight sets – to advance in the back draw. Haddad's run was finally stopped by ninth-seeded Madeleine Paolucci (Case Western Reserve University) in a tiebreaker (5-7, 6-1, 10-3).

Albion's final women's tennis match of the fall is an Oct. 2 date at Alma College.

VanDorn, a sophomore from North Aurora, Ill., led the Britons to three victories last week, including results over MIAA rivals Saint Mary's College and Adrian College. Averaging nearly 10 assists per set, VanDorn also collected 36 digs and four block assists. She has seven double-doubles on the season after achieving the statistical milestone with a season-high 49 assists and 14 digs in the five set match at Saint Mary's and adding 29 assists and 14 digs in non-league action against Capital.

The Briton volleyball team, winners of three in a row to move its record to 9-5 overall and 2-0 against MIAA rivals, travels to Olivet College for Wednesday night MIAA match. The first serve is set for 6:30.
