McEntire, Vince gain MIAA weekly awards

Football cornerback Darrell McEntire and cross country runner Cassandra Vince represent Albion College among the Sept 10 Athletes of the Week in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

McEntire, a senior from Detroit who prepped at Loyola High School, limited the receiver he was charged with covering to 59 yards in the Britons 56-35 victory over Franklin (Ind.) College last Saturday. McEntire finished with a team-high 14 tackles, including 11 solo, and collected a pair of takeaways (a fumble recovery and an interception) for the defense.

The football team, 2-0 overall and receiving a vote in the D3football.com poll, completes non-league play with a 2 p.m. Eastern Time kickoff at Concordia University of River Forest, Ill., on Saturday.

Vince, a senior from Amherst, Ohio, was at the front of the pack Saturday, even running against competition from Division I teams from Bucknell University, the University of Detroit Mercy and Oakland University. She was the first runner to reach the finish in an invitational hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy, crossing the line in the 5K race in 17:46.1. It was the fastest winning time on that course since 2009 and 8th fastest performance ever for the 32nd annual running of the meet.

Thanks to Vince's effort, the Britons finished third in the team standings, ahead of the University of Detroit Mercy, a Division I squad.

The cross country team is idle from competition until Sept. 29 when it takes on another field of quality competition gathered for the Loyola Lakefront Invitational.
