The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced athlete of the week awards for five Albion College student-athletes Monday.
Jephte Jean-Claude (men's field events), Kiehl Smith (men's track), Allison Snyder (women's track) and Nia Thomas (women's field events) were honored as the athletes of the week in outdoor track & field. Israel Trevino gained the player of the week award in men's tennis.
Jean-Claude, a junior who prepped at Traverse City Central, achieved a personal record of 14.08 meters (46' 2 ½") in the triple jump during the Southern Invitational in Birmingham, Ala., last Saturday. He also finished third in the 110-meter hurdles, reaching the finish in 16.04 seconds.
Smith, a sophomore from Jonesville, Mich., raced past the field in the 1,500 meters. His winning time (3:59.05) was a personal record.
Snyder, a senior who prepped at Jackson County Western High School, achieved a personal record (17:56.65) in a first-place finish in the 5,000 meters.
Thomas, a junior from Honolulu, Hawaii, broke the school record in a runner-up finish to a Division II student-athlete from the University of West Alabama in the triple jump. She sailed 11.45 meters, the equivalent of 37' 6 ¾" on her final attempt.
The next outdoor meet for Albion is March 24 in Marion, Ind.
Trevino, a sophomore who prepped at Holt High School, won three of four matches at the No. 2 doubles positon with victories over DeSales University, Defiance College and Penn State University-Behrend in spring break action from Hilton Head, S.C. He also picked up singles wins over DeSales and Defiance at No. 3 singles.
The Albion men's tennis team is gearing up for a March 27 home match against Lawrence Tech University.
