Albion Announces 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame Class

Albion College will induct 11 individuals and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion teams in football (1965 and 1966) and men's swimming & diving (1971) into its Athletic Hall of Fame Oct. 20-21, Athletic Director Matt Arend announced Friday.

The honorees will join the current 305 individuals of the Albion Athletic Hall of Fame. The induction dinner will be held Oct. 20 at Baldwin Hall with the 2017 class also being recognized before the Albion-Alma football game the following day. The list of 11 individuals for the 2017 class includes:

Lindsay Brown Salvador, '07 (diving and track): Originally from Commerce Township, Mich., she achieved All-America status with a seventh place finish on the 3-meter board during 2007 NCAA Division III Championship. She was a two-time honorable mention All-American with 10th place finishes on 3-meter in 2006 and 1-meter in 2007. The MIAA's Most Valuable Diver in 2005 and a four-time all-MIAA award winner, she was a three-time league champion with 1-meter titles in 2004 and 2005 and adding a 3-meter title in 2005. She was selected as Albion's most improved track athlete for the 2005 season.

Kevin Bushinski, '88 (football, track): A three-time all-MIAA performer and 1988 co-captain in track & field, the Jackson, Mich., resident won league titles in the discus throw in 1987 and 1988. He also was an all-MIAA second team and football team's coaches award pick in 1987.

Amy Dempsey Karns, '95 (soccer, swimming): Originally from Marshall, Mich., she was an all-MIAA performer in swimming in 1992 and 1993. She went on to achieve school records as a member of the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams during the 1994-95 season. She also was awarded a letter for competing as a member of the soccer team in 1993.

Bruce Foulke, '59 (track): In competition before all-MIAA status was conferred, Foulke won league pole vault titles in 1956, 1957 and 1958. He established MIAA and school records in 1958 when he cleared 13' ¾".

Dan Fradeneck, '07 (diving): Described by former Albion swimming & diving coach Keith Havens as "a talented and gutsy diver", the Eastpointe, Mich., native gained All-America status with a seventh place finish on the 1-meter board during the 2005 NCAA Division III Championship. He was an honorable mention All-American in both diving events in 2004. The MIAA's Most Valuable Diver in 2006, he was a three-time all-MIAA award winner and three-time league champion.

Ben Gitler, '00 (football): A linebacker from Oak Park, Mich., he was the MIAA's Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2000. He achieved all-MIAA status twice, selected to the second team in 1999 and advancing to the first team in 2000.

Lori Haas Lepard, '94 (swimming): The Holland, Mich., resident set a 'B' qualifying time for the NCAA Division III Championship in 1992 and was an all-MIAA performer and the Britons MVP in 1991 and 1992. A recipient of the team's coaches award in 1993 and 1994, she graduated as a member of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams that held school records.

Neil Johnson, '98 (baseball, football): A linebacker from Rochester Hills, Mich., he was a three-time all-MIAA first team performer and member of MIAA championship football teams in 1994, 1995 and 1996. He was among the MIAA leaders with two fumble recoveries during the 1996 season.

Jared Owens, '02 (football and track): Achieved All-America status with a fifth place finish in the long jump during the 2002 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship and all-MIAA status six times between the two sports during his career. The Niles, Mich., native was a three-time MIAA long jump champion, sailing a league record 23' 8 ¾" in the 2002 league championship meet, and a member of the Britons MIAA champion 400-meter relay in 1999.

Casey Sivier, '96 (football): A tackle from Troy, Mich., the 2005 All-American and two-time all-MIAA first team pick helped the Britons achieved a 39-3 overall record and go undefeated against MIAA rivals over four years with him as an anchor on the offensive line. He was responsible for protecting quarterback Kyle Klein, a 2012 Hall of Fame inductee, and running back Jeff Robinson, a 2009 inductee, as the Britons claimed the 1994 national championship.

Ben Upward, '00 (soccer): Originally from Bloomfield, Mich., he was an all-MIAA second team pick after scoring 19 goals in 1999, a figure which stands as the single-season school record. He scored 12 of those 19 goals against league rivals to finish second in the league that season.

More about the teams slated for induction:

1965 and 1966 football: Led by MIAA Most Valuable Players Ron Springer in 1965 and Barry Siler in 1966 the teams coached by Morley Fraser combined for a 9-1 record against league rivals. Siler and Lloyd Harper were all-MIAA award winners in both seasons. Springer, John Ellinger, Gary Jones, Dave Neilson, Pete Boroday, and John Mullin helped Albion dominate the all-MIAA selections in 1965. Jim Dobbins, Chick Scarletta, Gerry Rittenbery, Mick McCarthy and Jim Bell were all-MIAA picks in 1966.

1971 men's swimming & diving: Albion defeated its four MIAA rivals in dual meets and achieved a 22-point margin of victory over Kalamazoo College in the league's championship meet. Mark VanderKaay sprinted to MIAA titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and Jim Everett did likewise in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events and the 200 butterfly. John Karazim and John McLaughlin added league titles in the 200 individual medley and 200 breaststroke, respectively, and the Britons also reached the wall first in the 400 freestyle relay.
